THE STORY
PRODUCTION DETAILS:
Writer:
For almost 150 years, the Muhammad Ali Dynasty transformed Egypt from an Ottoman province into an ambitious modern state — only to create the conditions that would ultimately destroy its own throne.
From Muhammad Ali Pasha’s extraordinary rise to power to the construction of armies, railways, grand palaces, and the Suez Canal, the dynasty pursued imperial expansion, modernization, and international prestige. But its ambitions came at a devastating cost.
Foreign debt, British occupation, nationalist movements, and growing political unrest gradually weakened royal authority. By the reign of King Farouk, the monarchy had become increasingly disconnected from the country it ruled.
In 1952, a military revolution forced Farouk into exile, leaving his infant son Fuad II as Egypt’s final monarch. Less than a year later, the monarchy was abolished — ending a dynasty that had transformed Egypt forever, but could not secure its own survival.
